DECEMBER - COWBOY CHRISTMAS & ERECTOR SETS AT THE GIBBY HOUSE
The decorating theme this year at the Arcade Historical Society’s Gibby House is “Cowboy Christmas” in recognition of Arcade’s history with the Lone Ranger. The author of the Lone Ranger, Fran Striker, lived in Arcade and is buried in Arcade Rural Cemetery.
Following this theme, the Gibby House parlor is decked out with an eight-foot tree wrapped with a lasso rope, decorated with rocking horse ornaments and topped with a cowboy hat. An exhibit with a mixture of old-time and modern-day cowboy items rounds out the display. Also on display at the Gibby House is another wildly popular toy of the 1950s: the erector set. Debuting in 1913, it was an educational toy that encouraged kids to create their own miniature buildings and models using small metal plates, girders, and angles held together with screws. Local collector, Mark Slocum, has generously loaned several of his Erector sets to the historical society along with several models he has built for the holiday exhibit. Another annual holiday tradition at the house is Arcade Elementary’s third and fourth graders participating in decorating for Christmas. They make ornaments in art class and each grade has their own tree festooned with their ornaments in the Gibby House fireplace room. The artists will take their ornaments home with them for Christmas. |

Small-Town Suffragists Cemetery Tour
At least one hundred thirty-six local women belonged to the Arcade chapter of the Political Equality Club (PEC) between 1905 and 1917. These small-town wives, mothers, and daughters worked diligently to convince the men in their lives to give them the same right to vote. You are invited to take a self-guided walk touring the graves of 62 of Arcade’s Political Equality Club members, at any time, in Arcade Rural Cemetery. This cemetery is located just after the railroad tracks going south on either Park or Prospect Street in downtown Arcade. A pdf map and guide is below. Download and print a copy of the pdf document or open it on your phone to “meet” these small-town suffragists.
