EVENTS CALENDAR & MERCHANDISE
A primary mission of the society is to preserve our local history and share it with the public through educational programs and exhibits. We invite you to check back regularly to see when special exhibits have been added.
CHEERS & BEERS FUNDRAISER AT BEER JUSTICE, April 21
Our programming, social media and exhibitions are the public face that demonstrates our mission— the preservation of local history. Another huge part of our work is the physical preservation and maintenance of the two historic buildings that house our collections of historic artifacts, photographs and documents. These buildings are as important as the “things” which are inside.
Keeping our history alive means keeping these buildings in good shape. To help with those expenses our first fundraiser this year is a “Cheers and Beers” on Sunday, April 21st at Beer Justice on Hurdville Road. 76 party-goers will enjoy tastings of either four selections of Beer Justice special brews, wines from Deer Run on Conesus Lake, or specialty seltzers. Each tasting will be paired with a small food plate specially chosen to complement it. Then finish off with a full glass of your favorite tasting. The late afternoon will start with a tour at 3pm by Beer Justice owners Paul and Tammy Romesser with tastings beginning promptly at 4pm. Tickets for the Cheers & Beers party are $50 per person. Contact a Historical Society trustee, purchase them at Beer Justice during regular business hours, stop by the society's office at 15 Liberty Street, or call (585) 492-0748 for tickets.

2024 HISTORY SPEAKS PROGRAMS ANNOUNCED
SATURDAY, JUNE 8, FAMILY HISTORY (10am-noon): Are you interested in finding out more about your family history, but don’t know where to start? The Western New York Genealogical Society, Inc., in cooperation with the Arcade Historical Society, is offering a free introduction to genealogy class to get you started. Learn what steps to take before delving into the various tools to aid you in your journey. This 2-hour class led by Charleen Scime will start you on the path to discovering your family history.
TUESDAY, JUNE 18, BLOOMERS (7pm): One of the current fashions in women's clothing is a long loose tunic over long pants. During the 19th century, a similar costume, developed at a water cure in Central New York, shocked the nation. What's the difference between this original dress and the Bloomer costume? Why was it seen as promoting women's health and economic opportunities? Returning speaker Jane Oakes gives a fascinating look at an iconic women's fashion. SATURDAY, JULY 20, MILITARY HEROES OF WWII (11am): Presented on the same weekend as the Arcade & Attica’s WWII weekend, popular speaker Greg Kinal will give a presentation on American heroes of World War II. This program delves into the exploits of great American soldiers who overcame enormous odds, many of whom won the Congressional Medal of Honor. |
SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, RESTORATION OF STEAM ENGINE NO. 18 (11am): Last in the series, Patrick Connors, Chief Mechanical Officer of the Buffalo Southern Railroad, Secretary of the Arcade & Attica Railroad Corporation, and President of the Friends of the A&A, will describe the many steps involved and the status of the restoration of the A&A’s Steam Engine No. 18.
Except for the June 8th family history class, each program is approximately one hour in length. All programs will be held at the Arcade Historical Society’s Old Fire Hall, 15 Liberty Street. The lecture hall will open half an hour before the program. Seating is limited, so please RSVP for the lecture(s) you wish to attend via phone 585-492-0748, or email ahs1807@verizon.net and leave contact information in case a wait list becomes necessary. Small-Town Suffragists Cemetery Tour
At least one hundred thirty-six local women belonged to the Arcade chapter of the Political Equality Club (PEC) between 1905 and 1917. These small-town wives, mothers, and daughters worked diligently to convince the men in their lives to give them the same right to vote. You are invited to take a self-guided walk touring the graves of 62 of Arcade’s Political Equality Club members, at any time, in Arcade Rural Cemetery. This cemetery is located just after the railroad tracks going south on either Park or Prospect Street in downtown Arcade. A pdf map and guide is below. Download and print a copy of the pdf document or open it on your phone to “meet” these small-town suffragists.
